NAWBO-SV Chapter History: Founder Bios

Margaret Smith is the CEO of Domus, one of the Bay Area’s largest independently owned kitchen and home accessories stores with locations in Los Gatos and Pleasanton, and an e-commerce website at www.domusonline.com.

Margaret is well known for her interest in and dedication to the small business community. In 1995/96, she was elected as the National President of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), the nation’s oldest organization representing the interests of the millions of women owned businesses in the U. S. In 1997, Margaret was elected as one of five world wide vice presidents of Les Femme Chefs D’Entreprises Mondiales, a 50 year old international organization representing women entrepreneurs from 38 countries.

Margaret has served as a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Advisory Board, and has served on the Board of Directors for the National Foundation for Women Business Owners (Center for Women’s Business Research), National Small Business United (NSBU), the National Women’s Business Council, and Wyndam Corporation’s Advisory Board. She has presented testimony before the U.S. Congress and members of the Administration on issues affecting small business; and was elected a delegate to the 1996 White House Conference on Small Business and served as a Vice Chair of the Northern California Delegation.

In June of 2000, Margaret was recognized by the Women’s Hall of Fame as a past President of NAWBO and for her work in establishing a $1 Billion Dollar Loan Fund for Women Entrepreneurs with Wells Fargo Bank. This loan fund has since grown to $26 Billion.

Prior to the ownership of Domus, Ms. Smith practiced business law. She lives in Los Gatos, California with her husband, Paul Shepherd.

NAWBO-SV Leader Has Passed

NAWBO-SV Founding President, Mary DeForest Cardoza, one of our chapter’s most respected leaders and mentors, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 after a short illness. Mary and other founding members are responsible for our chapter as it is today. She led and inspired others throughout her lifetime and we will always be grateful for her unwavering support for women business owners and our chapter.

About Mary: As a girl, Mary wanted to be a Foreign Service Officer and travel the world. She served with the State Department in Cambodia and Spain for 5 years before returning to the USA and starting her business in travel and yes she did fulfill her dreams and traveled the world many times.

Mary Deforest Cardoza was the President and CEO of Cardoza-Bungey Travel. Her agency and its experienced travel agents are considered among the top of the Bay Area’s travel experts. Cardoza-Bungey Travel was consistently listed and ranked in the top 10% of Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal’s largest woman-owned business in the Silicon Valley.

Mary will be missed by all of us.
