Speaker/Presenter(s):

Deira Gerritsen, co-founder the Executive Director of Lucina Maternity Foundation, a non-profit with a mission to improve the delivery of maternal health care in the U.S – beginning here, in Silicon Valley. For over 20 years, Deira worked for some of the world’s top media companies, helping them launch new products and services in various parts of the world; MTV in Asia, The STAR Television Network (Asia’s largest Pan-Asian Satellite delivered network), and CNBC in the UK and Asia.

As Deira hit the apex of her career, a life-changing moment would put it all into perspective. Her 5-year old son was diagnosed with a rare and serious form of cancer. All that had once seemed important now faded to the background and for the following 12 months, she lived at least 40% of her life at Boston Children’s Hospital.

When her son was pronounced “cancer free”, she knew that she had to put her start-up business experience to work on solving health-care related problems that she was passionate about.

After a few successful projects, she partnered with Dr. James Byrne, a leading OB GYN and thought leader in maternal health in the U.S. Together they created a non-profit organization called “Lucina Maternity” and were awarded funding from the family foundations of Google and Yahoo.

The goal of Lucina is to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths and injuries in the United States by improving the delivery of maternal health care.

Today, Lucina is on the precipice of building on-campus maternal health centers where women need never leave work again to get prenatal care. Because of Lucina’s partnership with Silicon Valley employers, new mothers will return to work and also receive postnatal care.

The stress it relieves, the money it saves and the satisfaction it provides is something that they hope will be the model for maternal health across the country.
