Corporate Partner Corner

Special benefits and offers from our corporate partners for NAWBO members.

President’s Message | June 2023

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

Join us in celebrating our 35th anniversary milestone and the conclusion of our fiscal period spanning from 2022 to 2023 this month. It fills us with immense excitement to share the milestones and achievements we have attained.

The NAWBO Silicon Valley Chapter, recognized as a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization, has ingeniously crafted enjoyable and engaging activities both in-person and virtually.
The Education Group under NAWBO Silicon Valley, our non-profit 501(c)(3), carried on with its educational initiatives. These included an in-person event titled “Marketing Your Business for Success and Growth”, and a virtual gathering with a topic on “Make Time for Your Goals”.
Additionally, fundraising activities were organized at Kendra Scott and the San Jose Sharks – Women of Teal.

Why do we do this?

Our mission is to empower a diverse group of women to attain self-reliance and autonomy. We aim to inspire, bolster, and impart knowledge to women who are running their own businesses.

We persist in our efforts to construct collaborative relationships with various organizations and companies. This is part of our ongoing commitment to augment the benefits we extend to our members through community partnerships. Some of our new partnerships include:

  1. Rotary International District 5170
  2. Macy’s Valley Fair
  3. Latinas in Tech

At our 5th Annual Crystal Chair Awards, we had the honor of acknowledging the remarkable contributions of three women from our community. We encourage you to mark your calendars for the forthcoming 6th annual event scheduled for March 2024.

As I enter my final year as President, my dedication remains unwavering in propelling the Silicon Valley Chapter towards novel frontiers.

I wish to express my deep gratitude to my outstanding Board of Directors, committee members and chapter administrators for their dedication and commitment.

“If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” — Maya Angelou

President’s Message | May 2023

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

There are different reasons why people join an organization. When NAWBO was founded, there were no other business groups open to women.

It wasn’t until 1974 that The Equal Credit Opportunity Act allowed women to have credit cards in their name without a co-signer, and women were not allowed financing for their business unless there was a male co-signer.

Thanks to NAWBO advocating for all women, the Women’s Business Ownership Act was passed into law in 1988.

Women in business today are shaping industries, driving innovation, and challenging traditional norms. Through their resilience, determination, and achievements, they are inspiring future generations and transforming the corporate landscape. By continuing to break barriers, advocating for gender equality, and supporting one another, women in business are creating a more inclusive and equitable world, where talent and opportunity know no gender boundaries.

In addition, we have created the 4 Cs of the NAWBO network for women entrepreneurs to lead their communities and create business opportunities for others:

Capital – Education and resources you need to choose the best financing options for your business.
Confidence – Leadership training and tools necessary to grow personally and professionally.
Community – A community of women who support women and provide the catalyst for change across the country and the world.
Capitols – An advocate for you and your business with elected officials from the nation’s capital to your state capitol.

We are creating leaders for a world of change, join our leadership and be a part of history in the making.

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall

President’s Message | April 2023

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

As entrepreneurs, our businesses are often our “babies”—we’ve launched them, poured all our passion and energy into them and watched them grow in all sorts of exciting ways. But just like children, the goal should always be to empower them to one day confidently take flight, freeing you up to step away, with little or no involvement, for a short vacation, to care for an aging parent or eventually to retire. We’re talking about building a business that can run successfully without you involved in day-to-day operations and surviving unforeseen circumstances.

At our recent Business Journeys virtual event we heard from NAWBO member, Diana Dibble, president/co-founder of Design To Delivery Inc, and the CEO of Tripod Coaching & Consulting LLC™. Despite facing major health issues, Diana was able to not only maintain her existing business but also start a new one. This demonstrates the power of entrepreneurship and the ability of small business owners to adapt and thrive in difficult circumstances. Her story also underscores the importance of community and support networks for small business owners like NAWBO and serves as an inspiration to other entrepreneurs who may be facing their own challenges and struggles.

The National Small Business Week, celebrated during the first week of May every year, takes place from April 30 to May 6 this year. The aim of this week is to honor the entrepreneurs of our country, who have played their part in bringing new ideas to life and growing our economy. The goal is to encourage small business owners to learn from the marketing campaigns and operations of larger businesses, to scale up their own operations.

Join us May 2 – May 3, 2023, for the National Small Business Week Virtual Summit hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration and SCORE. Attend this free, virtual summit to learn new business strategies, meet other business owners and chat with industry experts! This 2-day, action-packed event will include educational sessions, online business resources, and expert speakers.

President’s Message | February 2023

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

  • Vulnerability leads to transformation.
  • Ignite your vision by taking action.

President’s Message | November 2022

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

Every year Bank of America issues a report on the National Business & Economic Outlook and in the recent 2022 Women & Minority Business Owner Spotlight, small business owners have a positive outlook for their business, as revenue expectations continue to rise and expansion plans have sharply increased.

  • Despite the threat of inflation, supply chain and labor shortages, economic confidence has brightened since the spring, with confidence in the national economy increasing significantly.
  • Inflation and commodities prices remain the top two concerns for business owners, but concern has decreased since the spring. Ripple effects from inflation have increased concerns around interest rates, consumer spending and credit availability. As the threat of a potential recession looms, business owners are confident in their ability to weather economic challenges.
  • Women business owners have a positive overall business outlook, with most expecting revenue growth over the next 12 months and a majority feeling equipped to weather a downturn. At the same time, confidence levels around their business and their broader economic outlook are more tempered than their male peers.

To our sponsors and community partners, thank you for your continued support.

To our members, we strive to create powerful content with our quarterly education series and monthly networking events just for you. We are thankful for you.

To my Board of Directors and our behind-the-scenes gurus who work tirelessly to ensure NAWBO Silicon Valley preservers, my heartfelt appreciation for your dedication. In alphabetical order:

President’s Message | June 2022

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,
NAWBO Silicon Valley is nearing the end of the 2021-2022 fiscal year this month and we are thrilled to report on our accomplishments.
As a result of our membership survey, our members indicated they are looking for both in-person and virtual networking events for collaboration, camaraderie, business development and opportunities. Working with the CDC guidelines, our robust programming included:
  1. The NAWBO Silicon Valley – Education Group, our 501 (c)(3) non-profit created a quarterly education series.
  2. The program is a quarterly webinar/seminar for all women business owners, members, and non-members. Why do we do this?
    – to empower and educate diverse women to achieve self-sufficiency and independence
    – to encourage, support, and educate women who own and operate businesses
  3. The NAWBO Silicon Valley Chapter, a 501(c)6) non-profit created monthly fun and interactive experiences both in-person and virtually.
  4. Project Pros was hired for administrative services and to provide support to the Board in their individual roles.
  5. We invested in technology to properly archive documents, simplify internal processes, and broadcast meetings virtually.
  6. Public Policy page was added to the website to keep an eye on key legislation impacting women business owners.
  7. We continue to build community partnerships through Affiliations with other organizations and companies to provide added benefits to our members.
  8. We continue to honor and celebrate women business owners through our signature event – Save the date for our 5thAnnual Crystal Chair Award Gala at the beautiful Triton Museum and Garden scheduled in September.

I’m honored and privileged to have led NAWBO Silicon Valley these past two years through a pandemic and into a robust economy. As I enter my third year as President, I remain committed to work with the new Board of Directors and navigate the chapter through the current economy shift.

President’s Message | May 2022

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

“Women seeking to start their own businesses still struggle to access the capital they need. Not only do many entrepreneurs lack access to networks of equity investors and venture capital, but they also receive less than 6 percent of bank loans—even though 43 percent of SMEs are led by women. What steps are financial institutions taking to support women entrepreneurs? Are there new strategies yet to be explored, and what policies may be needed to support them?”

Last week, The Milken Institute held their 25th annual Global Conference centered on the theme of Celebrating the Power of Connection, “Throughout the past two years, the pandemic transformed the way we convene, collaborate, and connect—sparking both innovation for what’s next and gratitude for what once was.”

Take a moment and hear firsthand from the fantastic panel on the strategic focus for women owned businesses, Funding Women Entrepreneurs.

President’s Message | April 2022

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

Spring has arrived and we are delighted to resume our in-person events. Our Membership Drive Mixer last month was buzzing, and we welcomed 5new members.

I am a firm believer in enriching your mind and soul by meeting new people. I would like to thank my new friends Maggie, Savita, and Hung of Rotary 5170 for the invitation to attend their inaugural International Women’s Day event. I had a wonderful time connecting with many amazing women and learning of the remarkable services Rotary 5170 is doing locally and globally.

A big shout out to my friend Anne Freedman for her summary of NAWBO’s HERstory in the Making-Virtual International Summit with participants from 10 different countries. “Who Knew? Recycled Bras and Tequila Bottles = Ways to Save the Planet and Make $$ for Women Business Owners” Recycled bras going to 130 nonprofits worldwide, tequila bottles from Mexico for “to-go” cocktails, Moroccan skincare products, and innovative waste containers all are part of the global environment-conscious “circular economy”– and women business owners are leading the production and sales of these remarkable products and trends.” See here for resources to take your business global.

Let’s celebrate this Earth Day by taking a moment for ourselves and enjoy our beautiful Bay Area trails, parks, lakes, and ocean.

Until the next time…

President’s Message | March 2022

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,

March is Woman’s History Month, we reflect on the achievements of women who paved the way for others like the United States Mint in their launch of the new American Women Quarters Program, a new four-year coin program honoring the historic contributions of twenty trailblazing American women.

Beginning in 2022 and continuing through 2025, the series will feature five notable female pioneers per year from a variety of fields including women’s suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, and the arts. The groundbreaking program is an excellent way to remind future generations what can be accomplished with vision, determination, and a desire to improve opportunities for all.

This year, the women honored are Maya Angelou, a writer and activist; Wilma Mankiller, an activist and first woman elected as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation; Sally ride, a physicist and our country’s first woman astronaut; Anna May Wong, the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood; and Nina Otero-Warren, a suffragist, the first woman superintend of Santa Fe, New Mexico public schools, and in 1992 the first Latina to run for Congress.

The celebration continues with a NAWBO virtual global conversation HERstory in the Making “Minimizing, Maximizing, Rethinking: Women Entrepreneurs Drive a Circular, Sustainable Approach”.  Join us and our international sisters on March 30th, 2022, and hear about exporting your services OUT of the U.S. – “The How and Why”.

Let’s celebrate together at our upcoming mixer at Mezcal Restaurant on March 15th, register below (see NAWBO Silicon Valley Events below).

President’s Message | February 2022

Dear NAWBO Silicon Valley Members & Friends,
It’s Black History Month. Every February, we honor the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country’s history.
While Black History Month is the quintessential time of year to center black voices, that effort shouldn’t start and end in February. Black history is not just a month.
“There is no American history without African American history,” said Sara Clarke Kaplan, executive director of the Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University in Washington, D.C. The Black experience, she said, is embedded in “everything we think of as ‘American history.’ “

We are working hard behind the scenes with a lineup of in-person meetings starting in March. Stay tuned!

In the interim, join us for our two wonderful virtual events.
